We the People Bookshelf
We the People Bookshelf is a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities that provides a set of classic books on a selected theme. The theme for 2008 is "Created Equal." The "Created Equal" Bookshelf provides opportunities for young people to explore what the Revolutionary generation meant when it declared that "all men are created equal." What challenges has America faced, and where has it shown progress, in its efforts to live up to the ideal of universal human equality? How did Abraham Lincoln, whose bicentennial we celebrate in 2009, contribute to the idea and the reality of human equality in America?
Dodge City Public Library has received 17 English language Bookshelf titles, 4 Spanish language books, promotional materials and a "History in a Box" all based on the theme. These are currently on display in the youth services area of the library and are available for check out.
